Specialist involvement for larger or ongoing reality capture projects.

Not every project requires a separate specialist service or a fully outsourced workflow.

Sometimes what is needed is an experienced reality capture professional who can become part of an existing project team, contribute specialist capacity and take responsibility for a defined part of the work.

I’m Roland Kriston, a Reality Capture & Geospatial Specialist with hands-on experience across field acquisition, point cloud processing and the wider reality capture workflow.

I collaborate with surveying companies, reality capture teams, geospatial specialists, engineering organisations and other project partners on assignments where additional expertise, processing capacity or technical involvement is required.

Collaboration can be remote, on-site or a combination of both, depending on the project.


How I Can Contribute to a Project

The role does not need to be predefined by a standard service package.

Depending on the project, I can contribute to areas including:

  • reality capture workflow planning

  • field acquisition support

  • terrestrial laser scanning workflows

  • mobile mapping and SLAM workflows

  • point cloud registration and georeferencing

  • point cloud processing

  • QA/QC and data validation

  • troubleshooting complex datasets or workflows

  • preparation of project-ready spatial data

  • technical knowledge transfer and practical workflow guidance

  • technical coordination between field and processing activities

  • additional specialist capacity during demanding project phases

The scope can range from a clearly defined technical task to continued involvement across several stages of a project.

The objective is to fit the expertise to the project rather than force the project into a predefined service package.


🟠 Working Within Existing Teams

Collaboration is often most effective when specialist expertise becomes an extension of an existing team.

I can work alongside internal surveyors, processing teams, engineers, project managers and other specialists without replacing the structure already in place.

This can be useful when:

Additional capacity is needed
A project has more data, tighter deadlines or greater technical demands than the existing team can comfortably absorb.

Specific expertise is missing internally
A particular workflow, dataset or processing problem requires experience that is not continuously needed in-house.

Field and processing teams need to stay connected
Decisions made during acquisition can have significant consequences later in registration, processing, QA/QC and delivery.

A project changes during execution
Reality capture projects do not always follow the original plan. Site conditions, data quality, scope or deliverable requirements can change and require the workflow to adapt.

An independent specialist perspective is useful
Sometimes an experienced external view can identify a simpler workflow, a potential problem or a different technical approach.


From Defined Tasks to Ongoing Collaboration

Project involvement can take different forms.

For some assignments, the requirement may be very specific: processing a dataset, reviewing registration, resolving a workflow issue or providing additional field capacity.

For others, it may make more sense to remain involved across a longer part of the project.

That could mean supporting the transition from field acquisition into processing, helping maintain consistency across multiple datasets or locations, or contributing specialist capacity as project requirements evolve.

This flexibility is particularly useful for organisations that already have their own people, equipment and workflows but occasionally need additional experienced capacity without expanding the permanent team.

🟠 Remote and On-Site Collaboration

A significant part of reality capture project work can be carried out remotely.

Once data has been captured and transferred, processing, registration, georeferencing, QA/QC, workflow review and many other technical tasks can be performed independently of project location.

This makes it possible for me to collaborate with international surveying, geospatial, engineering and reality capture teams without requiring permanent on-site presence.

Where field involvement is needed, on-site participation can be considered depending on the location, project requirements and available equipment arrangements.

I do not operate a fixed proprietary equipment fleet. Field work can therefore be carried out using client or project equipment, rented systems or other equipment arrangements appropriate to the assignment.

This keeps the approach technology-independent and allows the capture method and equipment to be selected around the actual project requirement.


Collaboration Across Project Boundaries

Some reality capture assignments eventually require capabilities beyond what one specialist can or should provide alone.

In those situations, the right solution may involve other surveyors, geospatial professionals, engineers, technology specialists or project partners.

Where appropriate, I can work within these multidisciplinary arrangements and help connect the reality capture component with the wider project workflow.

The aim is to bring the right expertise into the project when it is needed, rather than force every requirement into a single capability.
